Replaces the pulse generator of a permanent pacemaker, the sealed unit under the skin that sends timing signals along wires to the heart. Through an incision over the existing pocket, usually below the collarbone, the old unit is removed, the wires are tested, and a new unit is connected and settled back into the pocket. The wires running to the heart are left in place.
