Uses a camera and instruments passed through small incisions between the ribs to cut the tight muscle at the lower end of the esophagus, the tube carrying food to the stomach. Dividing the muscle lets it relax so food and drink can pass through instead of backing up. It treats a swallowing disorder in which the muscle fails to open, causing food to stick, regurgitation, and weight loss.
