Open chest surgery in which an incision is made between the ribs so a cyst can be removed from the lung, along with any work needed on the lining of the chest at the same time. It is done for a cyst that has become infected, is pressing on healthy lung tissue, or has burst and caused the lung to collapse. A drain is usually left in the chest for a few days afterwards.
