Opens the chest between the ribs so the surgeon can take a sample of the pleura, the thin membrane that covers the lung and lines the inside of the chest wall. Working under direct view lets the surgeon see the lining and choose the most abnormal area to sample. The tissue is sent for laboratory examination to look for infection, inflammation, or cancer.
