Open surgery to repair the voice box after it has been broken, usually by a blow to the front of the neck. The surgeon exposes the cartilage framework, moves the broken pieces back into their correct position and holds them there so they heal in shape. Restoring the framework protects the airway and gives the vocal cords a chance to work normally again.
