Surgery to take out the epiglottis, the small flap of cartilage at the base of the tongue that folds over the windpipe during swallowing. It is removed when disease or a growth involves it, or when it blocks the airway. Swallowing is retrained afterwards because the flap that helps steer food away from the airway is gone.
