Removes part of the voice box for cancer, taking out the affected section while leaving enough of the structure for the airway to stay open and for speech to remain possible. Sparing the rest of the voice box is what separates this from an operation that removes the whole organ and leaves a permanent breathing opening in the neck. It is done under general anesthesia, usually with a temporary breathing tube in the neck and voice and swallowing therapy during recovery.
