Removes the upper portion of the voice box, above the vocal cords, while leaving the vocal cords in place, and in the same operation clears the lymph nodes and surrounding structures from one side of the neck. The neck is addressed because cancer in this region commonly spreads to those nodes. It is a long operation under general anesthesia, with a temporary breathing opening in the neck and swallowing therapy during recovery.
