Removes the upper portion of the voice box, above the vocal cords, while leaving the vocal cords themselves in place so speech can be preserved. Lymph nodes in the neck are not removed as part of this operation. It is done for cancer confined to that upper region, under general anesthesia, with a temporary breathing opening in the neck and swallowing therapy during recovery.
