Removes the entire larynx, the voice box in the neck that holds the vocal cords, and creates a permanent opening in the front of the neck for breathing. It is done for cancer of the voice box. Afterwards the airway and the food passage are completely separate, so breathing is through the neck opening rather than the nose and mouth.
