Surgical closure of an abnormal opening that connects the mouth and the nasal cavity, allowing air, food, or liquid to pass between the two where they shouldn't. This opening can result from a cleft palate, prior surgery, trauma, or a nonhealing wound in the roof of the mouth. The surgeon closes the opening with local tissue, sometimes reinforced with a tissue flap, working through the mouth.
