This is the application of a large plaster or fiberglass cast that covers the trunk and both legs, or a variant that covers the trunk, one whole leg, and part of the other leg (a '1.5-leg' spica), used to hold the hips and legs completely still while an injury or condition affecting the hip heals. It is most often used in young children recovering from a hip problem or fracture. The cast keeps the hip joints in a fixed, stable position for an extended period.
