Amputation that removes the front and middle parts of the foot at the joint line across the midfoot, leaving the heel and ankle intact. It is done for severe infection, poor blood supply, injury, or a tumor that has destroyed the forefoot. The remaining heel gives a weight-bearing surface that can be fitted with a shoe filler or prosthesis.
