Fusion of the Joint Below the Ankle

Vermont rates for HCPCS 28725

Fuses the joint between the heel bone and the talus, just below the ankle, so the two bones knit into one. The worn cartilage is cleared away, the bones are held together with screws, and bone graft may be used to encourage them to unite. Once healed, that joint no longer moves — which removes pain from it but reduces side-to-side flexibility of the foot on uneven ground.
