Fusion surgery that permanently joins the ankle joint together with the joints of the hindfoot beneath it, so those bones heal into one solid block. It is used for severe arthritis, deformity, or instability affecting several joints at once rather than a single joint. Screws, plates, or pins hold everything still while the bone knits.
