The rounded end of one of the long foot bones leading to the second, third or fourth toe is removed completely. It is done to take the pressure off the ball of the foot when that bone is driving a stubborn sore, callus, deformity or pain, often in rheumatoid arthritis or in a foot affected by diabetes. The bones leading to the big toe and to the little toe are handled by separate operations.
