Removal of the Bone End Behind the Big Toe

Rhode Island rates for HCPCS 28111

Removes the whole rounded head of the first metatarsal — the end of the long foot bone that forms the joint at the base of the big toe. It is done when that bone end has been destroyed by severe arthritis, infection, or deformity and cannot be saved or simply trimmed. Taking it out relieves pain and pressure under the ball of the foot.
