Emergency surgery that opens the tough fibrous sheaths around the muscle groups of the lower leg to relieve dangerous pressure that is choking off their blood supply. This version releases both the muscles at the front or outer side and those at the back of the leg, and includes cutting away muscle that has already died. The wounds are usually left open at first and closed at a later operation.
