Removes the leg through the two bones of the lower leg, below the knee, shaping a stump that can later carry an artificial limb. A rigid cast is applied straight away in the operating room to control swelling, protect the stump and allow early fitting of a prosthesis. Keeping the knee joint makes walking with an artificial limb considerably easier.
