Open surgery that exposes a dislocated ankle through an incision and puts the joint back into its correct position under direct view. In this version the joint is reduced without repairing the torn supporting tissues and without leaving hardware in place to hold it, though temporary pins through the skin may be used. It is chosen when the joint cannot be put back by manipulation from outside.
