Repairs the connection just above the ankle where strong ligaments normally bind the shin bone and the smaller fibula tightly together. When those ligaments are torn the two bones spread apart and the ankle becomes unstable, so the surgeon opens the area, restores the correct spacing, and holds it with a screw or a flexible suture device while healing takes place. It is often carried out alongside repair of a broken ankle.
