Repairs a broken ankle in which the bone is cracked on the inner side, the outer side and at the back edge of the shin bone where it meets the ankle joint. The surgeon opens the ankle, lines the pieces up under direct view and holds them with screws or plates, including fixation of the back fragment. This is done when the joint surface cannot be restored by simply setting the bone from the outside.
