The pair may be the knobs on the inner and outer sides, or the inner knob together with the back edge of the shin bone at the ankle. Through incisions the surgeon lines up each broken piece and usually holds it with plates, screws or wires so the joint sits correctly while it heals, since even a small shift leaves it wearing unevenly.
