Permanently stops growth at the growth plates of the shin and calf bones, at both the knee end and the ankle end, and also at the lower end of the thigh bone. It is done in growing children to even out a difference in leg length, so the longer leg stops while the shorter one catches up. Including the thigh bone is what separates this from the version that treats only the lower leg bones.
