Permanently stops growth at the growth plates of the shin and calf bones, at both the knee end and the ankle end of the lower leg. It is done in growing children to even out a difference in leg length, so the longer leg stops while the shorter one catches up. Only the lower leg bones are treated, without touching the growth plate at the lower end of the thigh bone.
