This procedure takes a small tissue sample from just beneath the skin of the lower leg or ankle, in the layer close to the surface rather than deeper within the muscle, so it can be examined under a microscope. The surgeon removes a piece of the tissue through a small incision for diagnosis, rather than taking out the entire growth or mass. This approach is used for tissue found near the surface rather than lesions located deeper in the leg.
