Opens the back of the ankle and releases the tight capsule and surrounding tissue holding the foot pointed downward, so the ankle can bend upward again. The Achilles tendon may be lengthened in the same operation when it is part of the tightness. It is used when stretching, bracing and therapy have not restored motion.
