Relieves dangerous pressure build-up inside the lower leg by cutting open the tough fibrous sheath that wraps a group of muscles, giving the swollen muscle room to expand. Without release, the pressure squeezes the blood supply shut and the muscle and nerve inside die within hours. It is an emergency operation after a crush injury, a fracture, or severe swelling, and the skin wound is usually left open at first.
