Removes the leg by cutting through the thighbone above the knee, at whatever level gives healthy, well-supplied tissue. Muscle and skin are shaped over the cut end to form a padded stump that can tolerate a prosthesis. It is done for severe infection, injury, tumor, or a limb whose blood supply cannot be restored.
