Surgery to relieve dangerous pressure buildup in more than one muscle compartment of the thigh or knee area, by cutting open the tight fibrous membrane (fascia) surrounding the muscles. It is performed urgently to protect the muscles and nerves from damage caused by swelling and reduced blood flow, a condition known as compartment syndrome.
