In a growing child, this surgery intentionally stops growth at the growth plates on both sides of the knee, the lower thighbone and the upper shinbone and fibula, at the same time. It's used to correct a leg-length difference or a significant alignment problem in the leg by slowing or stopping growth in a controlled way at multiple points around the knee. Timing is important, since the procedure permanently affects further growth at the treated sites.
