This is a surgical procedure performed on the growth plate near the bottom of the thigh bone in a child or adolescent who is still growing, done to slow or stop growth on that side of the leg. It's used to correct a difference in leg length or an angular alignment problem such as knock knees or bow legs. Because it works with an open growth plate, it's only appropriate before bone growth is finished.
