Surgery that permanently fuses the hip joint so that the thigh bone and the pelvis heal together as one solid piece, combined with cutting and repositioning the upper thigh bone just below the hip to set the leg at the right angle and length. Fusing the joint removes the pain of a badly damaged hip, at the cost of hip movement. It is chosen mainly for young, heavily active people in whom an artificial hip would be expected to wear out.
