Open surgery to put a hip back into its socket when the joint is dislocated because it did not form normally before or after birth, rather than because of an injury. Because the surrounding muscles are too tight for the hip to sit safely in the socket, the surgeon removes a segment of the thigh bone to shorten it and fixes the bone ends back together, relieving pressure on the joint. A cast or brace is normally used afterwards while everything heals.
