Open surgery to repair a break of the greater trochanter, the bony bump on the outer side of the top of the thigh bone where major hip muscles attach. The fragment is exposed, put back into position, and usually held with screws, wires, or a plate so the muscles pull properly again. It is used when the fragment has pulled out of place.
