Strengthens a weakened upper thigh bone at the hip with metal hardware such as a nail, pins, plate, or wires, sometimes packed with bone cement. It is done before a break happens, when the bone has been thinned by a tumor deposit or another disease and is at high risk of giving way. Fixing it in advance avoids the far harder problem of treating a break that has already occurred.
