The upper thigh bone is deliberately cut just below the ball of the hip and repositioned into a better alignment, then held with a plate and screws, an external frame, or a cast while it heals. It is done to correct a deformity, to shift how load passes through the hip, or to help a break that has failed to unite. Better alignment can relieve pain and put off the need for a joint replacement.
