Redoes part of a previous hip replacement by exchanging the cup that lines the socket side of the joint, while leaving the stem in the thigh bone where it is. It is done when the cup has loosened, worn through or lets the hip slip out of place. Bone graft can be added to fill in defects behind the cup.
