Removing the Ball of the Hip Without Replacement

Rhode Island rates for HCPCS 27122

Removes the ball at the top of the thigh bone and reshapes the socket, leaving the space to fill in with scar tissue rather than fitting an artificial joint. It is used when a hip has been destroyed by infection, or when an implant cannot be kept in place or replaced. The leg ends up shorter and less stable, but the source of pain and infection is gone.
