Takes out an artificial hip in a situation that makes removal difficult, such as cement that has to be chipped out of the thigh bone piece by piece without cracking it. A temporary spacer, often loaded with antibiotic, may be set into the empty joint to hold the space and treat infection until a new hip can be fitted. It is a longer and more demanding operation than a straightforward removal.
