This procedure permanently fuses the joint at the base of the thumb, where the thumb meets the wrist, using a piece of bone graft to help the two bones grow together into one solid unit. It is done to relieve pain and instability from arthritis or injury when other treatments have not worked. Fusing the joint eliminates motion there but can significantly reduce pain.
