Permanently fixes the thumb in the position facing the fingers, using bone graft taken from the patient during the same operation so the bones knit solidly. It is done when the muscles that would normally swing the thumb into that position no longer work, often after nerve injury, so that pinch and grip can be regained. The thumb is set in a working position rather than being powered by a transferred tendon.
