Microsurgery that rebuilds a missing thumb using the soft-tissue covering of the great toe: the skin, nail and pulp are lifted from the toe with their own artery, veins and nerves, wrapped around a bone graft shaped to form the new thumb, and the vessels and nerves are joined to those of the hand under a microscope. The skeleton of the great toe stays in the foot, and the raw area left there is resurfaced. The rebuilt thumb is intended to restore pinch and grip.
