Permanently joins some of the small bones of the wrist so they heal into one solid unit, while leaving the rest of the wrist able to move. Bone taken from elsewhere in the patient's own body is packed into the joint to help it knit together. It is done for pain from arthritis or an old injury affecting part of the wrist.
