Opens the wrist through an incision so the displaced wrist bones can be put back into their correct positions under direct view, then holds them there with pins, wires, or screws while the torn ligaments heal. One bone or several may be out of place. It is used when the dislocation cannot be reduced from outside, or will not stay reduced once it has been.
