Cuts and lengthens one of the two forearm bones, using bone taken from elsewhere in the patient's own body to fill and hold the gap that is created. It is done when one forearm bone is shorter than its partner — after an old injury, a growth-plate problem, or a difference present from birth — and the mismatch is straining the wrist or elbow. Hardware holds the bone in its new position while the graft knits in.
