This procedure opens the wrist joint through an incision so a small tissue sample can be taken directly from inside the joint for laboratory examination. It is used to help diagnose conditions affecting the joint, such as unexplained inflammation or a suspected infection, when a sample taken through the skin alone would not be sufficient. The joint is then closed after the sample is collected.
