Neck Fusion of the Top Two Spinal Bones

A fusion performed through the back of the neck that permanently joins the first and second bones of the spine, just below the skull. Bone graft, and wiring or screws where needed, hold the two together until they heal into one solid unit. It is used when instability at that level threatens the spinal cord, whether from injury, arthritis, or a condition present from birth.
