Open Repair of a Broken Breastbone

Vermont rates for HCPCS 21825

Repairs a fractured sternum, the flat bone down the center of the chest, through an incision, putting the pieces back into line and holding them there with wires, plates, or screws where fixation is needed. It is done when the break is unstable, badly displaced, or too painful to breathe against. Stabilizing the bone eases the pain and lets the person breathe deeply again.
