This surgery reconstructs the jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, by replacing it with an artificial, prosthetic joint device, rather than using the patient's own tissue or donor tissue. It is used for severe jaw joint damage or disease, such as advanced arthritis or a previous failed jaw joint surgery, when other reconstruction options are not suitable. The artificial joint is designed to restore jaw movement and function.
